Early Beginnings
St. Mary Magdalene Church in Newark-on-Trent has a history that spans over a millennium. The site has been a place of worship for around 1,000 years, with the current church being the third structure built on this location
Architectural Evolution

12th Century: The earliest parts of the current church date back to around 1180, when the church was substantially rebuilt. The crypt from this period still exists today

13th Century: The piers of the crossing and the west tower were constructed around 1220. The spire, which is one of the tallest in Nottinghamshire, was added about 100 years later

15th Century: The nave, aisles, clerestory, and chancel were built during the 15th century. This period saw significant expansion and enhancement of the church's structure

16th Century: Transepts and chapels were added in the early 16th century, further enriching the church's architectural complexity
