A Picturesque Village with Deep Roots

Historical Significance

Coddington has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. The Domesday Book of 1086 refers to the area now known as Coddington as "Cotta's/Codda's Farm"[1]. The village's name evolved over the centuries, with historical records sometimes referring to it as "Codyngton."

​

  • Medieval Period: By the 13th century, Coddington had grown in importance. The village played a role in the construction of Newark Castle, with "Coddington Stone" being used in its building around 1320

​

  • 19th Century: The village continued to develop, with the construction of a chapel in 1827 and the Church of England National School in 1846. The A17, built in 1935, runs through the village, and the A1 bypass dates from 1963

  • RAF Winthorpe: During World War II, RAF Winthorpe's married quarters were built at Coddington. After the air base's demise, these houses were sold to the council in 1976, and the area known as Coddington Camp was demolished in 1999-2000

  • Coddington Mill: The village is home to Coddington Mill, a four-storey brick tower windmill built in 1859. The mill ceased working by wind around 1944 after being damaged by a blast from a landmine
