About Balderton Village Trail

THE TWO-MILE ROUTE STARTS AND FINISHES AT THE CORNER OF MAIN STREET AND PINFOLD LANE

TOURISM/VISITOR AIMS:

1. Helping improve the appearance and awareness of Balderton Conservation Area

2. A “Welcome to Balderton” initiative to promote the approach to the village along London Road

3. Promoting tourism through greater awareness of the role of RAF Balderton and Balderton Old Hall in Operation

Market Garden (Arnhem 1944) and Sir Frank Whittle’s development of the jet engine

4. Supporting village shops; the route starts by the two pubs, passing two supermarkets and a fish shop and ending close to the Brisbane Court shopping precinct and cafe.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFITS:

1. Encouraging the active memory and oral history of long-standing residents by publishing memories of these localities

2. Promoting exercise to allow less mobile residents to leave their homes and explore their neighbourhood

3. Addressing health problems from lack of mobility, as well as isolation and its psychological impacts

4. Recognising the existing but hidden pride in the community and the village’s rich history.

The BENEFICIARIES are (i) local residents, particularly those that are less mobile; (ii) shopkeepers; and (iii) touring cyclists, those interested in agricultural and pre-industrial history, people interested in the history of the RAF, Operation Market Garden (including Dutch tourists), and jet propulsion.
